PROCEDURAL SEDATION COMPETENCIES
A critical aspect of procedural sedation practice is the privileging / credentialing of its practitioners. Given widespread variation in criteria and implementation, ICAPS has used their multidisciplinary consensus process to develop this statement on the necessary competencies to practice procedural sedation, and how these competencies are obtained, assessed, maintained, and privileged. These recommendations were developed using the framework of Competency-Based Medical Education, and are intended to be applicable to all types of sedation practitioners in all locations worldwide, including care for patients of all ages.
Our summary recommendations are found in the table: Procedural Sedation Competencies.
Full details of the rationale and development are found in the statement itself: Procedural sedation competencies: a review and multidisciplinary international consensus statement on knowledge, skills, training, and credentialing. British Journal of Anaesthesia 2025; in press.
